Sometimes Mr. Everything is waiting around the corner, holding a glass slipper.

But then she meets Ayden Black, a kilt-wearing, pierced, wild card and everything changes. He makes her want to buy all the bassinets and booties in the world, calling her dream of settling down with Mr. Right to the surface. But she's been down that road before, and she's not about to tumble down it again. She's tired of waiting for Mr. Everything to sweep her off her feet. This time, she's going to throw caution to the wind and go for Mr. Fun. But what happens when Mr. Fun becomes Mr. Everything?

Ayden Black has been in love with Michaela for as long as he can remember. There's only one problem: she doesn't know he exists. So when a fateful, drunken encounter suddenly puts him on her radar, he's ready. He just has to sharpen his flirting skills first. Juggling a failing company, and a coveted new job, his life is in turmoil. But there's one thing he knows for sure: Michaela may be the only person that can help him save his business, and he's not about to let her slip through his fingers. True love couldn't have better timing.

About the author:

I enjoy writing stories about people finding love in the most unexpected places, coupled with adventurous journeys, whether it's urban, fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary or paranormal romance. There's always a happy ever after, no matter how long it takes to get there. When I'm not working in my full time job, I don my supermom cape, or in most cases find myself trapped between the pages of a book in search for a hero who'll make me swoon with just a look or a word. My favourite form of therapy is knitting. Best. Therapy. Ever.

My name is McKenzie Perry. I’ve lived a life filled with secrets. Secrets that took me years to understand.
Secrets that my bestie, Gia, and I kept from the world. Secrets that only I knew. I wasn’t afraid of the lies,
the secrets, or the hidden skeletons. That’s not what frightened me. I was afraid that one day they would come out, somebody would find out the truth. If I am the only one that knew the secrets, the lies, then they were safe, right?

It took several years for me to understand the impact of lies. Lies I told, secrets I kept, and the lives they controlled. One of the things I know to be true is I did the things I did for a reason, even if I didn’t know it at the time.

They all had a reason.

My name is Mack and this is my side of the story.

As most of you know I am Jettie Woodruff, author of the Amazon bestselling Underestimated series. I also hate bios...
I am a lifelong writer, published for a couple years now. I write romance, erotica, and some dark erotica. The main thing people need to know about my writing is, I don't really write your normal, cliché, romance. I like to write on the edge where I like to keep my readers.

my Captor
When I woke in that place, I just wanted to survive. But survival came at a cost, for which they demanded my will and body.
         my Master
With pain came acceptance. Fully-dependent on the man who claimed me, I learned to appreciate what I had-life and relative safety.
                   my Protector
I watched him spill blood and tend my injuries. With betrayal came a revelation.
The only way out was to bring them all down or die trying.

EXCERPT
Through the haze of sleep, I felt hands on me. Cold and rough. I thought for a fleeting moment that it might have been Kyle. Then, I remembered our break up. It had happened weeks ago, but maybe that part was the dream. My memory was fucked and I couldn’t latch onto a thought long enough to ride it out of the fog. Too many hands. They groped and pulled—rough against my skin and digging into muscle and bone. I tried to retreat, my back pressed into a hard surface beneath me, and my nostrils filled with the smell of musk and damp stale air. I had no idea where I was, or how I’d gotten there. I kicked and gasped, trying to get back to the surface where reality lurked, shimmering in the distance, but just out of reach, like the sun on the surface of the water during a dive. A hand latched onto my hair and held my head back. My eyelids were finally freed from the sticky muck that held me in semi-consciousness, and I opened them to find myself staring up into unfamiliar green eyes. I only held his gaze for a few seconds—if that—but it seemed like it lasted for hours as my brain fought to categorize the details. Its useless attempt to understand what was going on. The man clutching my hair had vivid green eyes, but they may as well have been black given the emotionless void they displayed. His hair was shaggy, brown with a mix of grey, the same colors that stood out in his unkempt stubble. As if he needed any help looking rough. He exhaled and his breath settled over my face, reeking of booze and cigarettes. The smell made me queasy, but I didn’t have time to dwell on that, as another set of hands tugged at my jeans. My gaze traveled around the room, taking in the small crowd. At least half a dozen men surrounded the table where they had me spread out like a holiday feast. All dressed differently, from ragged tank tops to well-fitting dark button-down shirts, but they all projected an air of unchecked danger. Necks marked with tattoos, hands covered in callouses and scars. Scruffy faces accented their sneers and smirks, as they stood above me staring down with eyes starved of humanity and full of lust. Apparently, they didn’t expect me to put up a fight, because aside from the hand tangled in my hair, no one seemed concerned with keeping a tight grip on me. Probably because they outnumbered me, and I assumed they would have no problem beating the crap out of me as I struggled. They’d downright enjoy it. Unfortunately, I didn’t fully consider how that scenario would play out. I bucked and managed to knee the one pulling on my waistband in the face. He grunted, but I can’t imagine I inflicted as much pain as his retaliatory blow to my ribs. I sucked in air and rolled, curling around the injury and gasping for each painful breath as the sickening throb exacerbated my confusion.

AUTHOR BIO
I’ve been coming up with stories for as long as I can remember, and in elementary school I began writing them all down. Ghosts and vampires, have always been my favorite beings to write about. Maybe it was growing up with a grandma who always told me about how she’d always rush home to watch Dark Shadows, and growing up reading and watching anything paranormal that I could find.

My debut, Fractured Legacy (Paranormal Urban Fantasy novella), was released on October 22, 2013, and the sequel Beyond the Divide is currently in progress and expected to release in early 2014.

I am also taking a departure from the paranormal world with a BDSM Romance, Bound and Unbroken, which will also be released in early 2014. I go where my characters lead me, and Eric and Lena decided that I needed a definite break from the paranormal.

When I’m not spending time with the voices in my head, I work in business consulting and hang out with my husband and all of our furry family members.

Random Stuff:

I LOVE Rum, but that’s probably not a secret.

I love sexy cars more than I love rum. My top picks would be a ’65 Mustang, practically any Bugatti Veyron, or an Aston Martin Vanquish.

I once based a character in a story on my husband, and the character died.
Don’t bother trying to figure it out, I never released that book.

I’ve never met some of my closest friends in person–some of them live on the other side of the world.

I never set out for anyone at work to know that I’m a writer, but now they buy my books, so it’s a good deal.

I’m not terribly good at being girly–I don’t wear makeup, only own 4 pairs of shoes, and I’ve never had a manicure.

I learned to handle a gun before I learned long division.

I cuss like a sailor unless I’m around my grandma.

While most of the people in my graduate research classes were buried in books, I was glued to the TV researching the evolving portrayal of “Indianness”.

I’ve seen Disturbed in concert 3 times.

I still have a crush on Jason David Frank (aka Tommy Oliver the Green/White Ranger)

I work with my husband and it’s the 3rd time we’ve worked for the same business.

If I’m not watching Top Gear, I’m probably watching something that was filmed before I was born. Currently, Dick Van Dyke is in my DVD player.

I have a phobia of crickets.

Should I throw you one hell of a fact if you’ve made it this far? I was diagnosed with PTSD two and a half years ago, and my doctor suggested that
I start writing again to help cope with the symptoms.

I want you to, laugh, feel sad, get pissed off, and be happy. I also like to make you question your morals. That is probably my aim more so than anything, make you fall in love with the bad guy. Sometimes I can pull it off and sometimes not so much. I guess it depends on your forte. I like to write about the bad boy, and have you fall in love with him.
I have always read, for as long as I can remember. My first taste of a dark read was VC Andrew's, Casteel series. I need to read that one again.
I am overwhelmed with the support and friends that I have made throughout my endeavor, and thank each and every one of you personally for all you do to help, for promoting me, for recommending my books, and most of all for those little IM's that I get throughout the day from people who love my work. Thanks guys, you're all my rocks, and live in my heart.

Love is like a snowflake; beautiful but fleeting in its presence…
I’ve been in love. But I’ve also been lied to, betrayed by those closest to me and I’ve suffered loss. Sadly it’s those last three things that stick with me the most. The only real constants in my life are music, Angus my dog and Rhiannon; my guitar.
But things changed when she walked into my place of work. All blue eyes, curves and a warmth that could melt even my hardened heart. I was taken over by feelings that I didn’t expect so soon. Guilt plagued me and I took my anger out on her.
On Mallory.
But I fell fast and hard and there was nothing I could do to stop it. When she too became the victim of heartbreak I was the only one who understood her pain but I was the last person she wanted help from.

Would I ever convince her that we could be friends? And would I ever accept that she couldn’t love me back?

Keela Daley is the black sheep of her family. She has always come second to her younger cousin Micah. Even in the eyes of her mother, Micah shone bright, and Keela faded to black. Alec Slater is a bachelor, never one to bed the same woman, or man, twice. He is a free agent who does what he pleases and answers to no one; that is until a fiery Irish redhead with a temper to match her hair colour knocks him on his arse. Literally.

She hates to admit it, but Keela needs a favour from the cocky Slater brother, a huge favour. She needs him to not only escort her to Micah’s wedding, but to also pose as her boyfriend. Alec agrees to help Keela, but has certain conditions for her to abide by. He wants her body and plans to have it before anyone can say I do.

What he doesn’t plan on is losing his heart as well as the possibility of losing his family when someone from his past threatens his future.

Lily White - Hard Roads
Hard Roads Front
This life isn’t one that I chose for myself.

Years spent as a daughter in the Dominion MC left me washed up and struggling to breathe. Life was never flowers and sunshine. It was gravel and dust, the trails of dirt left behind when the brothers tore out, floating up from the ground to hover in front of an angry, red sun.

I could never have imagined that a life sitting at rock bottom could get any worse, but it did.

Life is funny like that.

Just when you think things can’t get any more bleak, a shade is drawn leaving you staggering and blind – lost in a world of heartache and sorrow.

I met J.D. Brooks on the road and he swept me off my feet. Literally. But not in the way you might think.

He was both an angel and a demon.

He was the most vicious storm that ever darkened my life.

He was also my salvation.

Stripped from the hands that always held me back, I was released into a nightmare that would threaten everything I thought I knew about the crap hand I’d been dealt.

I thought I could never hate a man more than the one who stole me from the life I’d known.

And in our time together, he would teach me one important lesson:

That in the end, it doesn’t matter how our paths intersect, because when it comes down to the basic truth of our lives...

...we’re all stuck traveling down hard roads.

About the Author:

Lily White is a dark writer who likes to dabble on the taboo side of eroticism. Most of the time she can be found wandering around aimlessly while her mind is stuck in some twisted power play between two characters in her head. You may recognize her in public by the confused expression, random mumbling, and occasional giggle while thinking up a scene. Lily’s favorite things in life are reading, thinking about reading, buying books for reading….and writing. Her other secret pleasure is meeting with her plot editor in public to discuss her books and watching the shocked expressions of the people around her that don’t realize she’s talking about a book. When Lily is not reading, writing, wandering or freaking out innocent bystanders, she’s sleeping.

Synopsis
Cold, empathetic and step-ford. The good little girl syndrome on steroids. McKenzie Perry and Gia Edwards were at the top of the list. Spoiled rich girls, living the dream of every American girl. Flaunting looks, million dollar homes, talent, head cheerleaders, expensive cars, clothes, and any boy they chose to have.
They shared dreams, plans, and a lifetime friendship, never dreaming one night could be the end, changing it all with a speed so forceful, it couldn’t be stopped, a wildfire caught in the middle of the wind, spreading like a diseased outbreak.
McKenzie graduating at the top of her class, occupied her mind by landing a reporting job for one of New York’s most popular magazines.
Gia dealt with the horrific night in her own dangerous way. Gia partied hard, and when that didn’t work, she partied harder, lost in a world of sex and drugs, all angel with no wings.
This book has been rated for mature audiences only. Adult content not intended for persons under the age of eighteen.

About M. Robinson

M. Robinson loves to read. She favors anything that has angst, romance, triangles, cheating, love, and of course sex! She has been reading since the Babysitters Club and R.L. Stein.
She was born in New Jersey but was raised in Tampa Fl. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D in psychology, with two years left.
She is married to an amazing man who she loves to pieces. They have two German Shepherd mixes and a Tabby cat.

About Jettie Woodruff

Jettie Woodruff is a practicing physician and has been a Civil War buff for decades. No. Not really, she is not a doctor nor is she a Civil War buff. She is however a goof-off and has a hard time being serious for too long.
She does enjoy a challenge when it comes to her writing. She feels as though she needs to pull every emotion possible from her readers. She wants you to be pissed off, questioning your sanity, depressed, happy, and hopefully turn your mind from wanting to cut the villain into tiny little pieces to loving him by the end of the book.
Underestimated was her first dark endeavor. It was a goal alongside of writing a series, a standalone romance, a young adult, which she can’t check that one off. She tried she really did, but her mind just doesn’t work outside the gutter and it quickly became rated X.
Jettie lives on 163 acres in a rural part of Ohio. She loves living in Ohio, except maybe the snow, and the long winters, maybe the hot summers too, Ah, hell, she hates Ohio. She does love the land and the solitude of the country. She just wishes it was in a geographically in a better part of the country.
Jettie has two grown children and one who will be eighteen in a matter of days. YES!!! She has also recently just had her first, cutest ever, most adorable, granddaughter in the whole world. Her oldest daughter just hit her with the news that she will be adding another grandchild to the family in February. Although she is sure she will fall in love with the little creature, she still can’t say the G word.
Jettie enjoys reading as much as she loves writing. She has way too many favorites to list, but one of her all-time favorites from years ago was the Casteel series from V.C. Andrews. One of her new favorites is C.J. Robert’s, Captive series. Reading it gave her that needed push that she required to say the hell with what people think and write Underestimated.
By day Jettie is wearing business attire and managing a mattress store. By night she is in front of a keyboard or her Kindle, wearing, well let’s not go there. Underestimated was her fifth book published. The first one was just shy of a disaster, not that it was a
bad book. People liked it. She just knew nothing about it, no revising, no editing, just a spur of the moment…. “Oh, I wrote a book, lets publish it.” Train wreck and a half. Her Star series was one of her favorites and is held dear to her heart. She is now working on an adult romance that should be live around the end of August, early September. She
can’t seem to stay focused on it at the moment, due to a much needed Bahamas vacation coming up with Adam Levine’s walking around half naked, buying her drinks.

Alexis Noelle's Breaking Free

Blurb:

Holly James is trying to move on with her life, but it’s not easy. She can’t stand to be touched by anyone, not even her own family. She is a lost broken shell of the person that she used to be. She realizes that shutting everyone out is much easier then opening up and letting someone hurt her.

Drew Walker is no prince charming. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself and has no intention of changing. He loves the life of excitement and entitlement that comes with being the lead singer of a band, and has no plans to get tied down anytime soon.

When these two meet there is an immediate chemistry. The thing that surprises Holly is that she can tolerate his touch. He makes her feel like herself once again and gives her the freedom and comfort she has been desperate to find. On the other hand he is self-centered, egotistical, and everything that she should stay away from.

What happens when the one person who can save you might also be the person who can break you?

“There was something about Drew, but I had no idea what it was. He was self-centered, cocky, and definitely not prince charming. Maybe that’s why I liked him though. Maybe I didn’t want to be saved by the handsome prince. Maybe I wanted to be corrupted by the evil king.”

Book Title: Gorgeous Rotten Scoundrel Author: Nina G. Jones Genre: Erotic Romance (Humor) Release Date: June 15, 2014 Hosted by: Book Enthusiast Promotions

Synopsis He was a pig, a jerk, selfish, callous, crude, tactless, prone to outbursts and gorgeous. The kind of gorgeous where you didn’t even attempt to hide the fact that you were staring. I knew the type: His entire life he has coasted on his good looks, artificial charm, and sex appeal. Everyone wanted to be on him or be him. I had been hurt by jerks like him before. He was like those guys but far worse. I was the unfortunate sucker to be offered a gig I desperately needed as his live-in chef for a Summer in the Hamptons. But I wasn’t like the other girls, the models and socialites who came through the revolving door of his bedroom. I would bite the bullet, take the gig, deal with his sexist comments, his expectation that I would fawn over him, and have no problem letting the door hit my ass on the way out when I was done. But then something unexpected happened that changed everything and I realized that there maybe more to him than the labels I had affixed to his character. Maybe. But if he really wanted me, it wasn’t going to be easy, not like everything else in his life. He was going to have to work, I was going to make him miserable. He was going to hate wanting me just as much as I hated myself for wanting him back. Heath Hillabrand: International Supermodel. Womanizer. Gorgeous Rotten Scoundrel. excerpt
He leaned in to kiss me, and I sort of, kind of, pushed back. But I'll admit, it was a weak attempt, because dammit he's so fucking hot and his kisses taste like sex. If there was a sex-flavored popsicle, it would be called the Heathsicle. Maybe we could do this just this once and get it out of our systems, I thought to myself, pulling him in by his shirt collar as we kissed.
He moved to my neck, kissing it so softly, and it made everything tingle. I cannot believe I am making out with a supermodel. He buried his face into the crook of my neck, kissing softly, but pausing in between, caressing my skin with his warm breaths.
Why is he doing this to me? It's like he knows I have a weak spot for narcissists.
He ran his right hand up my thigh, pushing my dress up. All I had underneath was a thong, a flimsy shield for a sex machine like Heath Hillabrand. He grabbed my ass firmly, pressing me up against him and when I felt his huge hardness through his jeans, the reality of the situation began to sink in, but not nearly as much as when his fingers slid into me.
Oh god, oh god, oh god. This is the point of no return, get your shit together. You cannot be this fucking weak, Sadie.
"Okay, we have to stop," I said, pushing him away from me, as a I panted for air. My skin was prickly all-over with sex tingles and my body so wanted to keep on, but that sliver of sober brain I had left would not let me move forward.

  Excerpt:
UNEDITED AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE prologue Caelan Life is like a flame. It burns bright for a while, then it flickers and fades, until finally one small breath extinguishes it and we're left with the ashes.   The house was quiet, but I still waited ten more minutes, making sure I heard the sounds of my dad snoring. I’d been grounded for a month the last time I got caught sneaking out. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. I crept over to my bedroom window, sliding it up as quietly as I could. It squeaked and I halted my movements, holding my breath to make sure no one in the house stirred. I all but jumped out of my skin when the door to the bathroom that connected my room to my sister’s opened. “Cael, what are you doing?” She asked, standing there in pajama shorts and a tank top. Her eyes were wide, reminding me of a doll. “Isn’t it obvious?” I whispered, nodding at my half open window. “Mom and dad are going to kill you if you get caught,” she hissed, padding into my room like she owned the place. Nosy little sisters were good for nothing. I missed the days when I could bribe her to keep quiet with candy. “I can’t miss this party, Cayla,” I groaned. “I’m the quarterback. I have to be there,” I reasoned. “I want to go,” she squared her shoulders defiantly. “No,” I hissed through my teeth. No fucking way was I bringing my sixteen-year-old sister to a senior party. It wasn’t because of her age that I wanted her to stay behind, but the way I saw my friends looking at her. Cayla was too sweet and innocent to get wrapped up in one of those fuckers. I’d kill them if they touched my sister. “Fine, then I’m going to wake up mom,” she turned on her heel to stalk out of my room. I reached out and grabbed her arm, my fingers digging into her skin. “No,” I said sternly. “Don’t be a little tattle tale bitch.” Her eyes widened at my harsh words. Yeah, Cayla and I bickered like most siblings, but we also got along better than most too. She wasn’t used to me being so rude. “Let go of me,” she yanked her arm from my grasp. “You can be such a dick, Caelan.” She headed back towards the bathroom and stopped in the doorway. “I won’t say anything to mom and dad about this, but you owe me.” “Deal,” I smiled. She started to leave, but something in me made me say her name. “Cayla?” “Yeah?” She stopped, her blonde hair swishing around her shoulders. I swallowed thickly. “I love you, you know that, right?” She rolled her clear blue eyes at me. Cayla and I looked a lot alike—so much alike that many people believed we were twins. “I see what you’re doing here, you still owe me dickwad.” I chuckled. “Believe me, I know.” I was surprised she hadn’t put up much fight. I think she knew the real reason I didn’t want her to go and probably wanted to avoid me getting in a fight—which would result in our parent’s finding out that we had both snuck out. “Have fun,” she smiled, closing the bathroom door. “Night, Cayla-belle,” I said softly, so low that she couldn’t hear me. I eased the window the rest of the way up and crouched outside. I waited a minute to make sure Cayla wasn’t going to reappear—or one of my parents—then closed it. I tiptoed down the eave of the roof, spotting the taillights of Kyle’s car waiting down the street for me. I lowered to my stomach, sliding over the edge and grabbing on. I dropped down to the ground, careful to tuck my body so I didn’t injure myself. Getting down was the easy part of sneaking out. Getting back up…now that was a different story. I jogged down the street to Kyle’s white car. “Dude, what the fuck took so long?” He asked when I finally slid into the passenger seat. “My sister caught me,” I muttered. Kyle grinned and I didn’t like his smile one bit. “Why didn’t you bring her? She’s hot, I’m sure someone could’ve had some fun with her.” I glared at him, my fists clenched. “Don’t talk about my sister like that.” Kyle raised his hands in mock surrender, a smirk playing on his thin lips. “It’s the truth. A lot of the guys would love to have a piece of—” I punched the side of his face. I didn’t care if he was my friend or not. No one talked about my baby sister like that. Hopefully he’d take this as a lesson and so would the other guys. “Fuck, Caelan, did you really need to punch me?” “Yeah, I really did. Maybe that will teach you that running your mouth about my sister is a bad idea,” I retorted. “Would you want me making comments about your sister?” “My sister is fourteen,” he countered. “Mine’s only sixteen,” I continued to pin him with a glare. “Fine, whatever dude. She isn’t worth getting punch over for no-fucking-reason,” he hissed. He finally pulled away from the curb. “Where’s this party at?” I asked. After we’d won the football game, I’d had to head home for dinner—my parents were really big on family time. Sometimes ‘family time’ could be a major pain in the ass since it kept me from doing stuff with friends, but when I heard some of them talk about how messed up their families were I was silently thankful for my overbearing parents. “The Cove,” he answered, winding around a turn too fast. I knew better than to complain. He’d only speed up. The Cove wasn’t really a cove at all. It was a rock formation near the lake that provided great shelter from the surrounding neighborhoods. As long as we kept the noise level reasonable, most people didn’t know we were out there. “Leah is going to be there,” Kyle said casually, watching me out of the corner of his eye for a reaction. I’d been going after Leah for a few weeks now. She always tried to blow me off, but I could tell I was breaking down her walls. It wouldn’t be long until I had her right where I wanted her. She was enjoying playing hard to get, and I was enjoying the chase, but it ended tonight. I’d have her. Kyle parked a block over from The Cove and we walked from that point. People would get suspicious if a bunch of cars were parked too close. “Cael?” I turned at the sound of my name, my lips curling up as I spotted Leah. Her shiny red hair was curling down her back and her lips were coated in some kind of shiny gloss that I was desperate to taste. “I’ll see you later…I guess,” Kyle winked, heading on without us. “You know,” I told Leah, “you shouldn’t be standing out here all by yourself where anyone could get you.” “Oh,” she purred, striding forward, “is the big bad wolf going to eat me?” She asked, purposely letting her breasts brush against my shoulder. “Maybe,” I smirked, staring down at her. “And maybe,” she stared brazenly up at me, “I want him too.” Aw, hell. I’d been waiting weeks for this moment, and I wasn’t going to let it pass me by. I reached out for her, my hands finding the curve of her butt, and pressed my lips to hers. She let out a soft little moan that stirred something inside me. I pressed more firmly against her as her fingers pulled at my hair. I knew she was a feisty little thing. I nipped at her bottom lip and then plunged my tongue inside her mouth. I wanted her and I wanted her bad, but we were standing on the street, and I did value my life, because if I got caught my dad would be pissed enough to string me up by my balls and leave me to die, so I broke away. “That’s hardly over,” I warned her. She giggled, reaching for my hand. “I hope not…and it certainly doesn’t feel like it’s over,” she bit her lip, running her fingers over the hard-on pressing against my jeans. My breath hissed through my teeth as she felt me up. If I’d driven I would’ve told her to forget about the stupid party and we would have went back to my car to finish this. I led her through the tall grass and around the large rocks where the party was roaring. A small fire provided warmth—but wasn’t large enough to attract unwanted attention. Someone played music from their iPod dock and bodies swayed. “Dance with me,” Leah pleaded, pulling me towards everyone else. I wasn’t a dancer, but I agreed just for the pleasure of watching her sexy little body move. She grinded against me and I closed my eyes, tilting my head back. “If you keep doing that,” I warned her, grabbing her stomach and rubbing my thumb against the underside of her breast, “I’m going to haul you out of here and make you scream my name.” She looked up at me, her brown eyes sparkling in the moonlight. My throat tightened as her tongue flicked out to moisten her pouty lips. “I wouldn’t complain.” “Fuck,” I growled, my hands tightening against her. I wanted her and I wanted her bad. “Come on,” I pulled her away from everyone else and into the tall grasses. I kept dragging her until we were far enough away that we wouldn’t be found easily. I sunk down on the ground, pulling her with me onto my lap. “You’ve been teasing me for weeks,” I lifted her shirt off her head. “This ends tonight.” “Just make it good,” she challenged. “Oh, trust me, baby, you don’t need to worry.” ⌘⌘⌘ When we returned—clothes and hair mused, but completely satisfied—the party had grown even larger. It seemed like everyone in our senior class was in attendance. People wanted to talk and congratulate me on the game. I smiled and nodded—but honestly, I didn’t really care. Football was fun, but it wasn’t my whole life. I sat down on the ground, beer in hand, with Leah between my legs. Her head rested against my chest. When the sun started to peek above the edge of the lake, we all knew it was time to leave. I said goodbye to Leah, giving her a long lingering kiss. Tonight had been good and I wasn’t ready to let her walk away just yet. “Come on, Lover Boy,” Kyle pried me away from her lips. I laughed, calling to Leah, “See you later?” She nodded, her cheeks flushed with happiness. Kyle dropped me off at the same spot he’d been waiting for me earlier. I walked slowly towards my house, my head bowed. When I finally looked up, ready to cut across the side yard to the back, so I could get back to my room, I noticed that the front door was slightly ajar. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Oh, shit. My parents had woken up and found me gone. I was in so much trouble it wasn’t even funny. I swallowed thickly, my heart pumping in my chest as I made my way up the front steps into the house. There would be no point trying to sneak in. I had been caught and I needed to face this. When I pushed open the front door the rest of the way, I was surprised to find the house in disarray. Drawers were open, lights smashed, and our belongings strewn about everywhere. “What. The. Hell,” I gasped. My heart raced even faster. Something bad had happened. It looked like someone had broken in and tried to rob us. I walked to the back of the house, to the kitchen, expecting to find my mom and dad there calling for the police, but it was empty. “Mom!” I called. “Dad!” Silence greeted me. Maybe they had run to the neighbors house? Or were at the police station? Or—? Something told me that neither of those things had happened. Dread settled over me, sliding through my body like toxic sludge. I swallowed thickly, heading for the main staircase. I took the steps slowly and when I came to a standstill. Blood. Blood everywhere. My shoes were growing damp with it. “Dad!” I dropped to my knees, not caring that his blood was now soaking my jeans. “Dad!” I screamed again and again—willing him to answer. I rolled him over, choking on a sob as his lifeless eyes met me. There was so much blood. God, it was fucking everywhere, seeping out of a series of knife wounds on his chest. I released him, running for my parent’s room. “No!” I yelled, when my eyes took in the sight of my mom lying on a blood soaked mattress, her eyes focused on the ceiling. There were cuts and slashes all over her. I couldn’t mistake the sound of her blood dripping from the bed onto the hardwood floors. Drip. Drip. Drip. I ran to Cayla’s room next, praying that she had hidden and was okay—or better yet, hoping I’d wake up and find this to all be a nightmare. “Cayla!” I shouted, clutching my stomach as it heaved violently. Like my mom, she was lying in her bed. Her eyes stared straight at me—the color so light it was almost white. Her normally rosy complexion was now a grayish blue color. Her throat had been slit open, the blood coating her, the bed, and the floor. Her mouth was open in a never-ending silent scream. I fell to the ground, sobbing hysterically. “Cayla,” I cried, crawling on my hands and knees over to her bed. “Cayla, please! You can’t die! Cayla!” I smacked her cheeks, shook her, yelled at her, and none of it did any good. She was gone. They were all gone. I pulled my phone out, fumbling to press the right buttons. “911 what’s your emergency?” “Help! You have to help me! They’re dead! They’re all dead!” “Who’s dead, sir?” The calm voice asked me. “My family! They’re dead! God, they’re all dead!” “Sir, what’s your address?” I couldn’t answer the woman. I had lost all capability of speaking. A strange noise was escaping me—half crying, half screaming. I shook Cayla some more, hoping in vain that what I was seeing would disappear and she’d wake up and tell me I was crazy. I’d rather be losing my mind than face this reality. When I knew that Cayla wasn’t going to wake up I sat on the floor beside her. I rocked back and forth, sobbing, my blood-covered hands running through my hair. I kept muttering under my breath, “This isn’t real, this isn’t real, this isn’t real.” That’s how the police found me. Even five years later, I still felt like I was stuck in that room, rocking back and forth beside Cayla. Only now, I said, “This is real.” BitA Full Add on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20761170-beauty-in-the-ashes
